Remembering Ruth Wade

Ruth Wade c.1995

One of the choirs founding members, Ruth Wade passed away on February 15th, 2011.

Not only did Ruth participate in every concert from 1983 to 2009, she was a passionate supporter of the choir. Ruth was involved with many of the choir activies. From fund raisier, organizer of our 25th anniversary celebrations and Heritage Train event, historian, chief welcomer and event coordinator - the list of activities to which she fervently applied herself was endless. Ruth was also the prime mover behind the Choir's 2009 performance of 'A Christmas Carol' which raised more than $2,000 for a local charity. Ruth was always there, and always with a cheery disposition and a kind thought. Her energy and enthusiasm will be missed not only by the Choir, but throughout Uxbridge.

Sergei Rachmaninoff - All Night Vigil - Op. 37
One of the greatest choral works of the 20th century and regarded as the pinnacle of Russian Orthodox music. Rachmaninoff considered it one of his finest achievements and requested that the Fifth movement be sung at his funeral. Written in 1915, in part to support the war effort, it was performed many times immediately after its composition. However, with the Russian revolution of 1917, the piece was banned from public performance in Russia starting in 1918. The piece was so popular, however that clandestine performances were given in the musical underground of the Soviet Union throughout the 20th century. The Chamber Choir will perform 8 selections from this work in Rachmaninoff’s approved English version.

Also on the program will be some lighter fare to welcome spring:
JS Bach - The Peasant Cantata - BWV 212
A light, fun secular Cantata, using folks songs and popular music of Bach’s day. Those that have just filed their income tax with the CRA will appreciate the fun poked at the tax man in this work.

A guest appearance by the
Tudor Consort of Durham will round out the program.
